In the time that it takes you to read this story, Daniel Byler and most of the students who've taken his class at the College of William and Mary will be finished with this section of the newspaper.
They might even be finished with the entire paper.
Byler, a 20-year-old student from Parkersburg, W.Va., is regarded by many classmates on campus as an expert on rapid reading. He leads a course on techniques to increase reading speed without sacrificing content retention.
As a sophomore last spring, Byler began offering the unofficial course to about two dozen interested students. By this fall, registration for his course ballooned to 100. Byler divided the course into three sections and began charging fees to pay four teaching assistants to help him manage the students and their work.
He hopes to register 200 students next semester for the course and double the number of teaching assistants.
The assistants, all of whom have taken Byler's course, review students' work on speed-reading exercises, track student progress and offer feedback to improve, he said.
Byler, meanwhile, devotes most of his Sunday to preparing his lessons, teaching the class and coaching his assistants.
